Backstage is an open-source framework for building an internal developer portal that brings a service catalog, documentation, and reusable software templates into one place. It helps platform and DevOps teams reduce tool sprawl by standardizing how services are registered, discovered, and operated, including clear ownership and links to runbooks, dashboards, and CI/CD workflows. At a high level, Backstage works by storing structured metadata about systems, APIs, and components in a software catalog, then using a plugin architecture to surface information and actions from existing tools through a consistent UI.

With Backstage, teams onboard faster, find the right owners and operational context quickly, and run common workflows more reliably; without it, knowledge and dependencies stay scattered across wikis and dashboards, increasing toil and the risk of missed handoffs during changes or incidents. This gap exists because operational metadata is usually fragmented unless it is intentionally unified and kept up to date.
